Design & Technology

Design and Technology Policy (PDF)

Our aims and objectives

Design Technology plays an increasingly huge role in modern society and we believe that we need to prepare our children to confidently become part of the rapidly changing world around us.

We want children to become creative problem solvers both as individuals and by working collectively as a team.

To do this we encourage our children to explore and experiment with a wide variety of media to test their properties, understand aesthetics and the environmental impact of using different materials.

  • From Lower Foundation stage we begin by developing their own natural curiosity and begin to talk to children about how to plan, select tools and materials, create, join together, manipulate and reflect upon their product. We also introduce food technology and simple cooking techniques.
  • In Upper Foundation, they can build on the skills and techniques already learned and add more complexity to their work to achieve the Early Learning goals:

“safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function

-“Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes.  They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings   through design and technology” (Development Matters EYFS-EE 2012)

  • Throughout Key stage 1, we work towards achieving the National Curriculum aims of: design, make, evaluate as follows:
  • the children add additional techniques and skills as their confidence and experience grows and are able to plan in more depth what they want to produce and begin to use measurements to develop accuracy and quality.
  • They will learn to test and evaluate their products and make suggestions for improvement.
  • The children will also begin to understand the principles of nutrition as they develop their cooking skills

We aim to always foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose to their work.

We want to encourage children of all ages and abilities to independently select appropriate tools and techniques to use in their work by applying their knowledge and understanding of the subject while always considering their own safety and the safety of others.

How do we achieve this?

Throughout school we have children of various different abilities and understanding therefore the school uses a variety of teaching methods and strategies including whole class, individual and group activities. With results by outcome, by setting challenges of increasing difficulty and by using adult/peer support in certain cases as appropriate, we try to always be fully inclusive.
